Admirably staged and you can intelligently dialogued, it has no high problem in living off their extremely unsightly title.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Film Bulletin told you “The film moves on an easy rate, the brand new talk is smooth and you may characterisations basically effective. The fresh new film’s creator and you will director, Robert Rossen, sets up a beneficial multidimensional chess online game, to own mortal stakes, between Johnny, his boss (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), good cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will good scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose sis (Nina Foch) spent some time working on casino and dated a beneficial corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The latest caustically epigrammatic program, the latest cast’s suavely regulated gestures away from like and you can danger, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you may fashionably assertive photos (and his governmental conscience) make this pugnacious yet intricate spectacle a low profile classic of one’s category.” [ 10 ]

Whilst the spot employs a familiar trend, the fresh new characterizations is fresh and also the shows adequate in order to overbalance. Dialogue is terse and topical, preventing the psychological, phoney contact. Strange cam bases show up once in a while in order to escalate desire and you can briefly stop the attention. Strong teamplay by Robert Rossen, doubling due to the fact movie director-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, brand spanking new author and you will associate producer, plus aids in making it a mellow production.” [ eleven ]

It is mostly a question of watching Mr. Powell experience their paces stylishly when you find yourself a large cast of actors and you may actresses promote your classic support. Evelyn Keyes plays the favorable little lady exactly who brings forth the new finest in your and you may Ellen Received ‘s the smooth and slinky vixen whom becomes your towards jams. Thomas Gomez was oily just like the villain and Lee J. Cobb do a special able concert tour as the a weary cops inspector who fundamentally closes the fact. Significant amounts of ingesting and you can smoking is accomplished by most of the alarmed.” [ 12 ]
